How to Seal your Marble Tiles and Marble Pavers

Sealing Marble Pavers for Long-Lasting Beauty in Melbourne and Sydney

Maintaining the elegance of marble pavers in outdoor spaces like patios and pool areas requires proper care and protection. While naturally durable, marble can succumb to stains, scratches, and weathering over time. Sealing your pavers offers a simple yet effective solution to preserve their beauty and longevity. We recommend AQUAMIX’s range of sealers, all of which can be found on their website here.

Understanding the Benefits of Sealing:

  1. Enhanced Stain Resistance: Sealers act as a barrier, preventing liquids and contaminants from penetrating the stone’s surface and causing discoloration.

  2. Increased Durability: Sealing protects against scratches, scuffs, and other forms of physical damage, ensuring your pavers remain pristine for longer.

  3. Colour Vibrancy: Sealers can enhance the natural color of the marble, restoring its luster and making it appear polished and new.

Choosing the Right Sealer:

Two main types of sealers are available:

  1. Impregnating Sealers: Penetrate deeply, providing long-lasting protection without altering the natural appearance of the marble. Ideal for maintaining a classic look.

  2. Colour-Enhancing Sealers: Enhance the color and vibrancy of the stone, suitable for restoring faded pavers or achieving a desired aesthetic.

Sealing Process:

Impregnating Sealers:

  1. Test: Apply a small amount on an inconspicuous area to assess application ease and desired results.

  2. Prepare: Ensure the surface is clean, dry, and free of debris. Apply at a temperature between 40°F and 95°F (5°C and 35°C).

  3. Apply: Use a low-pressure sprayer or microfiber applicator to generously coat the pavers. Aim for a “wet” look that lasts 3-5 seconds on porous surfaces.

  4. Repeat: Apply a second coat after 10 minutes, ensuring even coverage.

  5. Remove Excess: After 10 minutes, buff the surface with clean, dry cloths to remove excess sealer.

  6. Clean Equipment: Use a solvent like denatured alcohol to clean tools.

Colour-Enhancing Sealers:

  1. Test: Apply on a small area and wait 48 hours for curing to assess the desired outcome.

  2. Prepare: Ensure the surface is clean, dry, and free of residue.

  3. Apply: Use a roller, brush, or applicator to apply the sealer, avoiding surrounding areas.

  4. Remove Excess: After 30 minutes, wipe off excess residue with clean, dry cloths. This step is crucial for the chemical reaction.

  5. Repeat: Apply a second coat after 60 minutes. A third coat may be needed for porous surfaces.

  6. Curing: Allow 2 weeks for complete curing and avoid moisture contact for 8 hours after application.

  7. Clean Equipment: Use methylated spirits to clean tools.

Additional Notes:

  • Colour-enhancing sealers may not prevent etching from acidic liquids or wear.
  • Enhancement level varies with the stone type.
  • Reapplication may be necessary over time due to cleaning, wear, and tear.
  • Treated surfaces cannot be restored to their original look after enhancement.
